The Counties Manukau U19s secured an impressive 20-6 win over Taranaki at Sanders Park in New Plymouth on Saturday.
In challenging conditions – a strong southerly wind and grass that could do with a mow – the visitors starting strong with a try to Roman Fa’amausili on the back of a quick tap.
Counties Manukau had more changes in the first half they were unable to capitalise on and took an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Austin Carew scored a pair of second half tries to put Counties Manukau in control and they rode some resolute defence to victory.
Nathan Halliday was the Red (Courageous) Player of the Day while Carew picked up the Black (Working Hard) Player of the Day award.
The Counties Energy Women’s Development side went down to Auckland 39-0 in their match.
In their pre-season the Steelers Development won 19-12 over the NZ Harlequins XV while the Under 85kg also won their weekend pre-season game against North Harbour 24-7.
