The PIC Steelers have ridden a hot start to claim a 32-19 win over Bay of Plenty in their Bunnings Warehouse NPC match at Navigation Homes Stadium on Friday night.
Reon Graham’s side made a ferocious start the game, scoring four tries within the first 12 minutes of the game to power out to 26-7 lead.
Prop Kauvaka Kaivelata, who was outstanding up front, Sam Tuifua, Riley Hohepa and a penalty try contributed the points early while Hohepa added two conversions and two penalties.
The PIC Steelers showed plenty of attitude as the Steamers came back at them in the second half but their defense stayed strong and they secured their first win of the season.
The win lifts the PIC Steelers into seventh for the time being with more games to be played across the weekend.
They head south to Hamilton next Sunday for a game against neighbours Waikato.
