The Counties Energy Heat’s winning run in the Farah Palmer Cup presented by Bunnings Warehouse has come to an end with a 13-5 loss to top-of-the-table Waikato at St Paul’s Collegiate on Saturday.
After two convincing wins to open the season, Saua Leaupepetele’s side went to Hamilton hoping to make it three straight but they came up against a quality outfit.
After conceding an early penalty goal, the Counties Energy Heat scored the opening try of the game through winger Jaymie Kolose.
But that would be the only points the visitors would score as Waikato turned a 5-3 halftime deficit by scoring a converted try and a late penalty to prevent the Heat from collecting a bonus point for their efforts.
The Counties Energy Heat head back to Navigation Homes Stadium next Friday night for a game against neighbours Auckland in a double-header that will feature the PIC Steelers facing Hawke’s Bay.
