The Counties Manukau U85kg side started off well against Auckland and held the favoured side in check through the first hour of the game. But at 10-9 and with 20 minutes to go, Auckland came back strong to secure a 24-9 victory.
The coaching staff was proud of the performance particularly with many injuries during the game.

The Counties Manukau U18 Boys beat Waikato 36-22 in Te Awamutu in a terrific performance.
They are into the final 1v2 crossovers v North Harbour this coming weekend.
Counties Manukau started well by controlling the game for the first 15 minutes scoring two tries to Thomas Setitaia and Ofa Latuila, the first being converted from the sideline by first-five Hunter Maxwell.
Waikato struck back with two unconverted tries to close the gap before Counties Manukau came back with two more converted tries to Christopher Pesamino and Thomas Setitaia just before the break.
The second spell was a much tighter affair with one try to Elijah Solomona converted by Maxwell followed by two interceptions resulting in tries to Waikato.
The Counties Manukau U18 Girls had a huge week after a big loss last week against BOP and came away from a trip to Taranaki with a 22-20 win.
The win was dedicated to player Chant'evai Makasisi, who couldn’t travel down as her grandfather passed away the day before.
