Manurewa Women’s Premier side grabbed a convincing 51-5 win over Silverdale on the road in their first competition game in the Coleman Shield.

After an opening round walk over win, the Leilani Perese-coached side put together a sound performance to secure maximum points.

Pukekohe played strongly but were unable to beat Auckland Marist, eventually going down to the visitors 22-15 at Colin Lawrie Fields.

“I guess we always knew it would be a tough game against Auckland Marist – last year’s defending champs,” said skipper Rebecca Burch. “We were in it the whole time and had patches on and off.

“Definitely big ups to our backs, who scored some great tries out there.

“Tough contest; hopefully we can learn and build from that.”

The Pukekohe side has come up against competition heavyweights Grammar TEC and Auckland Marist so far and have been very competitive.

“We are close but close isn’t close enough yet,” Burch said. “We have got to keep building. I said to the girls today consistency – Tuesday and Thursday trainings and then put it together on Saturday.

“Knowing we are close is really good at this end of the season. Hopefully we can start getting some points on the board and get the win as well.”

Papakura proved no match for an impressive North Shore outfit, going down 60-12 at Massey Park.
