Manurewa have advanced to the semi-finals of the Coleman Shield and are the sole remaining Counties Manukau side after beating Pukekohe 37-29 at Mountfort Park on Saturday.
Manurewa came into the game as strong favourites having racked up a score against the same opposition a month ago but in a quarter-final knockout game, Pukekohe responded and proved a worthy challenge.
Manurewa had their noses in front for much of the game, but Pukekohe did not go away and asked plenty of questions.
“Going into finals footy, it is a different beast,” co-coach Bruce Kaino told Counties Sports Hub.
“I told the ladies round robin is finished so anything can happen, and a wounded Puke is a dangerous side.
“Full credit to them for keeping us honest and pushing us to our limits.”
Papakura defaulted to Ponsonby in their match-up.
In the Richards-Martin Shield both local sides ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
Patumahoe fell 41-5 to Marist Brothers while Weymouth crashed to Grammar TEC 58-0.
