Five players and a coach from Counties Manukau were involved in the successful Manusina Samoan Women’s campaign over the long weekend.
Samoa Manusina upset Fijiana to win the Oceania Rugby Women's Championship.
The victory means Manusina will now compete in tier-two of the new World Rugby WXV competition, while Fijiana will be in tier-three.
Manurewa’s Jacquio Aiono, Glory Aiono, Ana Mamea and Uluulumatafolau as well as Pukekohe’s Utumalama Atonio were selected to play in the side – the first Samoan side since 2019.
In addition to the five players, coach Cynthia Taala Timaloa was also part of the coaching staff.
“It meant a lot to me especially having a massive break,” Jacqui Aiono said. “This jersey, team means a lot to me. The only jersey I hold so close to my heart because it’s me playing for me and my family and the rest of Samoa, especially the young girls who we’re paving the way for.
“This win is just the beginning for Manusina.”
