Counties Manukau Rugby is saddened to hear that life member John Gray has passed away peacefully at the age of 88.

Gray was a respected figure within the Counties Manukau Rugby fraternity, having served as an administrator for the best part of two decades.

“He was head of the judicial committee at CMRFU for many years,” Counties Manukau Rugby patron Don Shuker said. “He did it thoroughly and was always very clear in his rulings and the way in which he delivered communication.

“John was always there if needed for whatever task needed doing.

“He was a good guy; very definite in his way and had his own strong views but was always fair.”

Gray was made a life member of the Union in 2010 but had moved to Matamata in recent years.

A teacher by trade, Gray was principal at Pukekohe Intermediate School from 1989-1993, he also taught at Walton 1972-78 in the Waikato, Maungaturoto in Northland for a couple before years in settling in Pukekohe in 1988.

He was quick to get involved with Counties Manukau Rugby and became a fixture at Navigation Homes Stadium well through his retirement.

“On behalf of the Union, I want to acknowledge John’s passing,” said CMRFU chief executive Aaron Lawton.

“John gave a huge amount of service to our Union and to the game in general and we will be forever grateful for that contribution.

“We pass on our love and support to his family and friends and will miss seeing his face at games this season.”

Gray’s funeral will be held on Saturday at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Matamata
