The Counties Manukau U18 Boys finished their 2022 season on a high, beating Northland 15-5 on Rod Ketels Field at Pukekohe High School.
In bright conditions, the home side had to earn their 5-0 halftime lead. Lock Harry Fayers dotted over the line and then a great try by Daniel Lagalaga Slade early in the second half, followed by a crucial penalty kick by David Kama, ensured Counties Manukau had control of the game.
Locks, captain Taeao Pomale-Time and Fayers were great after both returned from their Super Rugby Franchise camps earlier in the week.
Fullback Master Kava also stood up, making crucial covering tackles on defence. Hooker Brock Wheatley also provided leadership in key areas of the game.
This victory wraps up a 4 win-1 draw-1 loss season for the team.
Northland kicked back late, putting some points on the board with a try but after some hearty defensive efforts from Counties the final whistle blew for a 15-5 victory.
The U16 Boys and U16 Girls both took part in the Chiefs U16 Rugby Festival Tournament in Te Awamutu.
The U16 Boys won both of their matches on Saturday – accounting for Thames Valley 50-5 and Taranaki 15-10 before going on to lose to Bay of Plenty 29-5 on Sunday.
The U16 Girls went down to Bay of Plenty 27-7 on Saturday, lost to Taranaki 20-10 and then fell to NZ Harlequins 20-5 on Sunday.
